PHOT 1100
This course introduces beginner to novice photographers to the basics of photography. They will build their photographic expertise and techniques through a variety of hands-on projects including the opportunity to choose an area of interest for a term project.

Course delivery method: In-person delivery, class and lab take place in the classroom.
Equipment provided by college: Students are given a DSLR camera to use for the term. They have access to college computers and software for post-production work and can check out tripods from the department for use with assignments.
Gallery show Assignment: Students select their best image from the course. A print and 11x14 inch frame are provided as part of the fees for PHOT1100. The photos are hung on the walls outside the library near the end of the semester. Students keep the framed photo after the show is taken down, a nice souvenir of their time on the course.
Term Project: The term project is rebranding an existing company through photographs. This term project allows students flexibility in subject topic, and they can explore an area of photography they are interested in, such as shooting animals and pets for a pet food company, travel photography for an airline or fashion photography for a clothing company.

Course delivery method: Mixed Mode. Labs are in-person and lectures are online in a synchronous delivery model.

Term Project: Students research a photographer whose work inspires them and then create a series of images in keeping with the work of that photographer. While the genre is open (Food, Architecture, Sports, Fashion, etc), they must create a theme and use each their images to demonstrate concepts and techniques (motion, depth-of-field, composition, perspective, storytelling, etc.) learned during the term. Students give a five-minute live presentation to the class using PowerPoint.

Equipment required: Your own smart phone camera (students are welcome to use DSLRs or any other type of digital camera).
Equipment provided by college: Langara will supply a smart phone tripod to each student, which is theirs to keep.
Gallery show Assignment: Students will produce and prepare their favourite image shot within the course for an online gallery. These galleries will be archived so the work of each student will be visible for viewing for at least one-year.
Term Project: For the term projects, students will produce a Conceptual Portrait. This is a portrait of a friend or loved-one That is designed to showcase a particular aspect(s) of the subject’s character, personality, or background. This is very similar to editorial portraiture where you see images of celebrities or public figures in magazines such as Vanity Fair or Rolling Stone, where the portraits are very creative and original. The term project consists of a short, written description of the subject and concept as well as the portrait itself.

Course delivery method: Online asynchronous
Equipment required: Your own smartphone camera, or your own DSLR or mirrorless camera
Equipment provided by college: Langara will supply a smart phone tripod to each student, which is theirs to keep.
Gallery show Assignment: Every semester, all PHOT1100 students submit their single best photograph of the term and Langara hosts the collection online for prospective students and the general public to see. We format the image with an 8x10 aspect ratio for this exhibit.
Term Project: The photo essay is a long-standing photographic format; today we find photo essays accompanying feature-length articles in magazines, in travel journals or in art galleries. Students put all their compositional and creative knowledge into practice with a six-image photo essay on the subject of their choosing.
