Gurjote Jhaj was named as one of the First Team All-Stars, as well as PACWEST Men’s Basketball Player of the Year. The 6’4” guard, originally from Richmond, BC, led the Falcons in scoring this year and finished as the second highest scorer in the league, with 22.14 points per game on average. Jhaj, who is in his second year of Langara’s Human Kinetics Program, was also named as a Player of the Week by PACWEST earlier in the season after scoring a formidable 37 points in one game against the Quest Kermodes.

“Gurj had an outstanding year this year, and it’s nice to see him recognized,” said men’s head coach Jake McCallum. “This award speaks to the time and dedication he puts into his game.”

Recognized along with Gurjote were two player’s from Langara’s women’s basketball team – veteran forward Carling Muir and rookie Denise Busayong.

Carling, who underwent aggressive treatment for brain cancer last year, led her team in scoring this season with an average of 16.69 points per game. She was third overall in the league. The 6’1” player, originally from Maple Ridge, was named to the PACWEST Second Team All-Stars.

“Carling has been an inspiration during her time here at Langara,” said women’s assistant coach Carly Scarr. “This season she was our go-to player on the court, and produced every night. She is definitely deserving of her all-star status.”

Rookie Denise Busayong was also named to the PACWEST All-Rookie team. The talented guard started every game for the Falcons this season, providing point production and tough-nosed defence.

“Denise was a pleasant surprise for us this year,” added Scarr. “She is a dynamic player who started every game, and gave it her all each and every time. We are proud that she was recognized for her play this season.”
