Artist Donates Painting to Langara College
November 6, 2009
On September 29th, 2009, Langara College officially celebrated artist and Langara College instructor Scott Plear’s donation of his abstract work, Big Bam Boo. The painting, which has hung in the dramatic 3-story entrance corridor of the new Langara College Library/Classroom building since the summer, was celebrated with a reception. Over 65 people attended including Langara College President David Ross and Board Chair David Chiang.
“Langara College is extremely grateful to have received such a generous donation from such a nationally renowned and accomplished painter,” said Sandy Biggerstaff, Manager, College Advancement. “It’s even more meaningful because, as an instructor, Scott has been such a large part of the Fine Arts department. Now, Big Bam Boo is also part of his Langara legacy.”
When asked about what prompted his decision to donate the painting, Plear said, “I was having coffee in the library one afternoon last spring when I looked up and saw the wall and knew the painting to put on it… I have worked at Langara for 23 years as a faculty member. I have felt very fortunate to be part of the college, which has been very generous to me in so many ways. I felt it was time to give something back.”
Plear is known for his risk-taking use of colour, texture, and layering. His works focus on non-objective imagery and are concerned with the use of visual elements as a means of expression. He has exhibited continuously for the past 28 years in Canada, the United States, and United Kingdom. In 2004, Plear was recognized for his contribution to the visual arts in Canada by being awarded membership in the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
