Student Gabrielle Beer wins Photo Contest
October 05, 2009
From high school darkroom to magazine cover, Gabrielle Beer’s career path is coming along nicely. The Langara College graduate recently won the Career Options Fall/Winter 2009 Magazine Cover contest, a magazine geared towards secondary school students to learn about education options.
This win is not the only notch in Beer’s belt. Her photography is also used in the recent Langara College Continuing Studies Image-Consultant Certificate Program advertising.
Beer’s interest in photography began in high school, in an unconventional way: “Originally I hid in the darkroom to escape Math and Chemistry classes,” says Beer. After her interest was piqued in high school, Beer enrolled in Langara College’s Professional Photo-Imaging Program. “It is a well rounded program…it teaches not only about photography, but also about entrepreneurial businesses so that you are prepared for a fast-moving industry”
Tomo Tanaka, Department Chair of Professional Photo-Imaging program was delighted to hear about Beer’s win, “It’s a feather in her cap. Our students enter a lot of competitions. Traditionally, we have always done extremely well, but it’s a really great opportunity for her to get exposure as she is just starting out.”
Beer may just be starting out, but it’s a strong start that should take her far: “I love taking photographs of people, doing whatever it is they do…capturing people is what inspires me.”
Congratulations Gabrielle.
