Vancouver, BC - Kevin Loring and Raes Calvert, graduates from the Studio 58 Theatre Arts program at Langara College, have each been recognized by the Hnatyshyn Foundation as recipients of the REVEAL Indigenous Arts Award.

The award honours Indigenous Canadian artists across disciplines with a $10,000 cash prize to fuel new creative works and leave a cultural legacy. Awards were given in six artistic categories: dance, music, theatre, literature, film/video, and visual arts/fine craft.

“It is most exciting that two of our graduates, from different generations, have received a REVEAL Indigenous Art Award from the Hnatyshyn Foundation,” said Kathryn Shaw, Artistic Director for Studio 58. “I congratulate both Kevin and Raes - they are both most deserving of this prestigious award and I am looking forward to their future artistic endeavors.”

Kevin Loring graduated from Studio 58 in 2000. He is an established actor, playwright, and director who has previously won a Governor General’s Literary Award for his play Where the Blood Mixes. His new play, Thanks for Giving will be produced by the Arts Club Theatre in fall 2017.

Raes Calvert is an up and coming artist who works as an actor and playwright. He graduated from Studio 58 in 2010. His play Redpatch, written with Sean Harris Oliver, had a production at Presentation House in North Vancouver in the spring of 2017. Calvert received a Best Actor Jessie Richardson Award nomination for his performance in Redpatch.

“It was a tremendous honour to be one of the 150 Indigenous artists across Canada to win this award. To share this honour with some of the most prolific Indigenous artists in the history of our country is quite humbling,” said Calvert. “I know that the training I received through Studio 58 shaped me into the artist I am today.”
