Vancouver, BC – Recognizing the growing demand for professionals in the financial services industry, Langara College has designed a new diploma program. Starting September 2016, the two-year Diploma in Financial Services will allow students to develop their skills in sales and negotiation, marketing, business writing, and financial management.

Students will gain a solid understanding of banking, investments, insurance and financial services products with an optional co-op term to refine the technical, conceptual, and interpersonal skills valued by employers.

“We are excited for the opportunity to collaborate with alumni and many industry representatives to develop this new diploma program.” said Assistant Chair, External Relations, Langara School of Management, Stephanie Koonar. “The program will provide a variety of career opportunities for our students, specifically designed to meet employer requirements.”

The diploma is perfect for anyone who enjoys sales and marketing and working with numbers. Graduates can play an important and rewarding role in helping people to effectively plan manage their financial resources and achieve their future saving and lifestyle goals.

Upon completing the Diploma in Financial Services, graduates have the opportunity to transfer into the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. Career opportunities for new graduates include positions as client services representatives, financial services representatives, personal banking officers, investment advisors or broker’s assistant.

When developing the new program, Langara aimed to help students acquire the key skills and knowledge required to succeed in the industry.  Input from a wide range of respected financial services experts was taken into account, including professionals from CIBC, Royal Bank, Vancity, BlueShore Financial, G&F Financial Group, Desjardins Financial Security, Freedom 55, Scotiabank, Sunlife, Bank of Montreal and Investors Group.

Langara alumna and Talent Acquisition Business Partner at CIBC, Sally Puri was one of these experts and said "I was pleased to be a part of the industry advisors on the development of this two year diploma. It has been designed to attract a certain type of student providing them with the right course mix to be well prepared to embark on a career in financial services.”

Students can learn more about careers in the financial services industry at a Career Panel on March 17 as part of Langara’s Co-op & Career Week.
