Vancouver, BC – Last May, Shenzhen, in Guangdong Province, turned into an intercultural classroom for 22 lucky students who participated in Langara College’s first China Field Study program. The students spent 18 days in the city gaining a first-hand understanding of contemporary China, business management, and the social and cultural context in which it exists.

The China Field Study program, led by Langara instructors Kenneth Wong (Langara School of Management) and Li Yu (Asian Studies), featured programming developed in partnership with Shenzhen Polytechnic in Shenzhen. In addition to offering six credits for two Langara courses, the program featured many opportunities to explore beyond the classroom.

Program highlights included visits to various Chinese businesses; opportunities to meet and interact with local students; city tours; Mandarin Chinese language lessons, and cultural classes including dumpling making, martial arts, and tea ceremony.

“The China Field Study program was an experience of a lifetime,” said Langara student, Daniel Crough. “I was able to learn about China’s culture and business practices through first-hand experience and build personal relationships with local students and professionals. I would recommend the China Field Study to anyone who wants to incorporate travel into their studies.”

“We were amazed at the students’ response to this program,” said Langara instructor Kenneth Wong. “Not only was the program fully subscribed, our student satisfaction ratings were through the roof. We’re looking forward to developing additional interdisciplinary programs that balance classroom learning with world experience.”

This 2015 China Field Study cohort included Langara students from a range of study areas along with students from BCIT and Simon Fraser University as both courses are eligible for university-transfer.

Applications are now open for the 2016 China Field Study tour.  This year’s program offers six credits for Langara courses INTB 2000: Introduction to International Business and ASIA 1225: Contemporary China. Students from Langara and other universities and colleges are invited to apply. Registrations close on February 29. For more information, visit www.langara.ca/china-field-studies.
