Vancouver, BC – As part of the Earth Hour movement, Langara College turned off the lights at the main campus on March 28 from 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm. The Library Building, LSU/C Building, Daycare, and Gym lights were all turned off, while A Building maintained some lighting for weekend evening classes. This resulted in approximately 80% of the campus having its lights shut down for the hour. “On campus, we are focused on reducing our carbon footprint in as many ways as possible,” said Wendy Lannard, Director of Facilities. “We have a responsibility as a college to be a role model for the community.” Langara College has been committed to sustainability and energy management initiatives since 1998, and works closely with BC Hydro to achieve its goals. From developing an in-depth recycling program to having a zero-waste management policy to constructing LEED Gold certified buildings, the College aims to be a leader in sustainability within the Vancouver community. By turning off the lights across campus for one hour, Langara saved approximately 300kWh of electricity. With that much energy, you could charge a cell phone every night for the next 21 years, or drive an electric smart car from Vancouver to Mexico (2,484 km). Earth Hour began as an initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in an effort to encourage people to turn off their lights as a symbol of their commitment to the planet. It is in its ninth year and has become a tradition worldwide.
