Vancouver, BC – Langara College has successfully met and exceeded the energy savings targets set out in its 2009-2014 Strategic Energy Management Plan. This accomplishment was recognized by its inclusion in the 2013 Carbon Neutral Government Year in Review report.

In 2009, with the support from BC Hydro, Langara created a Strategic Energy Management Plan. It outlined the College’s five-year plan to meet and exceed BC government regulations and industry benchmarks. As part of this plan, Langara set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy use in existing buildings by 15 per cent. To date, the College has exceeded targets and achieved a 19 per cent reduction in energy use.

“Over the past five years, we have taken a detailed look at our operations and implemented numerous energy saving projects ranging from creative lighting retrofits to optimized building heating and cooling schedules,” said Langara’s Energy and Building Operations Manager Patricia Baker. “We’re proud to be taking a leadership role with initiatives that reduce our environmental impact and enable us to be more resilient to rising energy cost.”

With consultation from Prism Engineering, Langara has established a foundation in achieving continuous energy savings and improvement. The College will continue to host a variety of campus engagement activities to encourage students, staff, faculty, and the community to participate in energy conservation actions.
