Vancouver, BC – A college-wide program to recognize outstanding students has been launched at Langara for the 2013/2014 academic year.

Starting this fall, students who achieve excellent academic standing, as outlined by set criteria, will be named to the Dean’s Honour Roll – an achievement that will be recorded on students’ official academic transcripts. The proposal to offer the designation was initiated by kinesiology Department Chair Dana Maslovat, who was looking for a way to recognize exemplary students in his program.

“I was familiar with a similar program at SFU from my undergrad student days and thought it would be worthwhile to try and initiate a more formal recognition process for our many talented and hard-working students,” said Maslovat. “I am thrilled it will be a College-wide program and hope it will become yet another reason that Langara is so well-respected in the academic community.”

Students will be evaluated for placement on the Dean’s Honour Roll at the end of each semester. The number of students who may achieve the standing is not limited, and all students who meet the criteria will be recognized.

“I am pleased that we are instituting this well-accepted post-secondary education practice at Langara,” said Dr. Brad O’Hara, Langara’s Vice-President Academic and Provost. “In doing so, we’re enhancing value to an already well respected academic experience for many of our students.”

To achieve Dean’s Honour Roll students must be in good standing and:

  • complete a minimum of 12 Langara credit hours in the semester being evaluated with at least 9 of those credits having been completed in normally graded courses; and
  • achieve a minimum semester grade point average (SGPA) of 3.50, calculated on all normally graded courses completed in the semester being evaluated.
